Essiac Tea

What is a "tisane"?

A tisane, ptisan or herbal "tea" is any herbal infusion other than from the leaves of the tea bush (Camellia sinsensis). They are caffeine-free and generally make delicious hot or iced beverages. (Essiac would be an exception to this, as it is almost always taken for well-being and not because of the taste.)

The English word "tisane" originated from the Greek word πτισάνη (ptisanē), a drink made from pearl barley.

These herbal or fruit-based concoctions can be made with fresh or dried flowers, leaves, seeds or roots, generally by pouring boiling water over the plant parts and letting them steep for varying amounts of time, depending on the ingredients. Seeds and roots can also be boiled on a stove. The mixture is then strained, sweetened if so desired, and served. Many companies, like the well-known Celestial Seasonings, produce herbal tea bags for such infusions.

Essiac is a great example of a tisane. Other examples include camomile, Rooibos, yerba mate, lemon balm, peppermint, and rose hips.

There is a large number of organic herbal infusions on the market, with more appearing every day. Herbal infusions are based on extracts of leaves, roots, stems, flowers or fruit of plants known for their healthful value and therapeutic qualities. Many of these herbs have been used for thousands of years to provide therapeutic benefit.

The eight herbs that make up essiac are mixed together, ground, and then boiled in water. The brew is then cooled and left to steep overnight.

Of course, with our essiac blend, all you have to do is open the pre-measured package and add the herbs to the water--we do all the careful selecting, grinding, mixing and measuring of herbs for you!
